IIT Bombay CCTV Shows Sahil Wakode Leaving Exam Hall During Probe

Fresh CCTV footage from IIT Bombay is being examined by the Mumbai Crime Branch as part of the investigation into the death of second-year BTech student Sahil Wakode. The footage from September 18 reportedly shows Wakode being questioned during an examination and subsequently leaving the exam hall between around 12:30 pm and 12:45 pm.

Investigators are reviewing CCTV recordings from the examination venue, campus and hostel to reconstruct Wakode’s movements after he left the hall. Footage reportedly shows him reaching his hostel room at around 1:25 pm, after which he did not leave the room, according to reports.

Wakode, a second-year student in IIT Bombay’s Department of Energy Science and Engineering, was found dead in his hostel room on September 18. His family has alleged caste-based harassment, while police have registered a case naming Professor Suryanarayana Doolla. The allegations remain under investigation.

IIT Bombay has apologised for an earlier communication that characterised events preceding Wakode’s death before they were established through an investigation. Doolla was removed from his administrative post as Dean (Administrative Affairs) but remains a faculty member.

Meanwhile, faculty groups at IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi and IIT Madras have expressed support for Doolla and called for due process. Students have submitted demands seeking an independent probe and changes to student welfare, disciplinary and support systems.

The Crime Branch investigation is continuing, with CCTV footage being used to establish the sequence of events surrounding Wakode’s death.
