IIT Bombay Cheating Rules: What FR2 Grade and Suspension Mean

The death of IIT Bombay student Sahil Ravindra Wakode has brought renewed attention to the institute’s rules governing academic malpractice and the use of unauthorised devices during examinations. Under a disciplinary framework approved by the institute’s Senate in July 2026, possessing or using unauthorised material or electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets, smartwatches and AI-enabled gadgets during an exam can attract an FR2 grade and a one-semester academic suspension.

Wakode, a second-year BTech student, was found dead in his hostel room on September 18, hours after he was caught using a mobile phone during an examination. IIT Bombay said he had uploaded the question paper to ChatGPT. The institute said no disciplinary proceedings had been initiated against him and that he had been counselled by the instructor and department head.

The rules distinguish between different forms of academic misconduct. Verbal communication with another student during an exam can attract an FR grade, while possession or use of unauthorised devices or materials carries the stricter FR2 provision. Repeat malpractice can result in at least one semester of suspension, with separate provisions for graduating students.

Students can appeal disciplinary decisions once, generally within 10 working days, on grounds including procedural errors, new evidence or bias. The institute’s rules also cover plagiarism, unauthorised AI use, copying in assignments and laboratory work.

Following protests after Wakode’s death, IIT Bombay’s administration accepted several student demands through an 18-point charter. The circumstances surrounding his death and allegations raised by his family remain subject to investigation.
