CCPA Fines Rapido Rs 10 Lakh Over Dark Patterns and Tipping Prompts

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has imposed a Rs 10 lakh penalty on Rapido’s parent company over alleged use of deceptive digital practices, including dark patterns and pre-ride tipping prompts.

The consumer regulator found that Rapido’s app encouraged users to add tips of Rs 10 to Rs 30 by suggesting that drivers could decline standard fares. The CCPA classified the mechanism as “confirm shaming”, alleging that the interface pressured customers into making additional payments beyond the fare displayed for their ride.

The action focuses on how digital interfaces can influence consumer decisions through prompts or design features that make users feel responsible for an unwanted outcome. In this case, the regulator considered the tipping mechanism an unfair form of interface manipulation.

The penalty is part of efforts to address dark patterns in digital services and strengthen consumer protection. The CCPA’s action also signals greater scrutiny of ride-hailing platforms and other online businesses over interface designs that may encourage customers to spend more than they initially intended.
