Priyank Kharge Challenges BJP Leaders Over Full Vande Mataram Recital

Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge has challenged BJP state president BY Vijayendra and Leader of Opposition R Ashoka to publicly recite all four stanzas of Vande Mataram from memory, without using a paper or teleprompter. He said he would resign if they completed the challenge.

The remarks come amid a dispute over Karnataka’s decision to restrict Vande Mataram to its first two stanzas at most state government programmes. The September 8 government order makes an exception for events attended by the President, Vice-President, Prime Minister or Governor.

The Congress has maintained its position that the first two stanzas should be used at its events, referring to a 1937 Congress Working Committee resolution. Kharge defended Karnataka’s approach by citing historical positions associated with leaders including Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose and Rabindranath Tagore.

The BJP has opposed the Karnataka government’s decision and has called for the complete version to be sung. The dispute has also moved into the legal sphere, with a public interest litigation filed in the Karnataka High Court challenging the state’s restriction.

Kharge said BJP legislators could separately recite the song in the Assembly and repeated his challenge for them to sing the full version without assistance.
