Who Is Khaled Al Nahyan? Abu Dhabi Crown Prince’s Growing Global Role at BRICS

Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan emerged as a key figure at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, where he held high-level meetings with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Pezeshkian later said Iran and the UAE had agreed to “put the past behind” and focus on the future, following their meeting on the sidelines of the summit.

Khaled, 44, was appointed Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi in 2023 and also chairs the Abu Dhabi Executive Council. He has increasingly taken on responsibilities across the emirate’s government and energy sector. In 2026, he has chaired meetings of ADNOC’s executive committee, overseeing issues ranging from energy security and major infrastructure projects to the company’s global LNG expansion.

His growing international role comes as Abu Dhabi navigates a complex Gulf environment, including differences with Saudi Arabia over regional policy, Yemen and economic competition. The Saudi-UAE relationship has become more complicated in recent years, with the two countries backing different interests in Yemen and competing to attract investment and global business.

Khaled’s rise is part of a broader transition in Abu Dhabi, where senior members of the Al Nahyan family continue to oversee major economic, security and investment institutions. His BRICS meetings highlighted the expanding diplomatic responsibilities being placed on the next generation of Abu Dhabi’s leadership, particularly as the UAE seeks to maintain relationships with major powers and regional rivals amid continuing instability in West Asia.
