Xi Jinping to Meet Trump in Washington for Talks on Trade, AI and Rare Earths

Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled to visit Washington next week for talks with US President Donald Trump, with trade, artificial intelligence and rare earth minerals expected to feature prominently in discussions. The September 24 meeting will be Xi’s first White House visit in more than a decade.

The visit is expected to combine formal ceremonies with private discussions. Trump plans to personally receive Xi at Joint Base Andrews, followed by a White House welcome ceremony, a military review and a state dinner attended by senior technology and business figures.

Trade tensions will be a central issue, with Washington and Beijing considering possible tariff reductions on a limited range of non-strategic goods. However, US officials have indicated that Washington is not currently expected to ease export controls in exchange for greater access to Chinese rare earth supplies, which are important to numerous technology and industrial products.

Artificial intelligence is another major area of discussion as both countries compete over advanced technology and AI development. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is also due to meet Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in New York before the summit, with AI, trade and rare earths among the issues expected to be discussed.

The talks come as the existing US-China trade truce approaches its November expiration date. The two governments are therefore facing several interconnected economic and technology disputes, while seeking to maintain dialogue between the world’s two largest economies.
