Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer 2 screenings in Canada have been suspended at York Cinemas due to a technical issue involving the film's North American distribution. The exhibitor announced on October 21 that it could no longer screen the Nelson Dilipkumar-directed film because it had not received the valid Key Delivery Messages (KDMs) required for theatrical playback.
The development comes less than a week after the film's theatrical release on October 15. Despite the disruption in Canada, Jailer 2 has reportedly collected more than ₹540 crore worldwide during its opening week, benefiting from the festive period around Navaratri and Dussehra.
Why Has York Cinemas Stopped Jailer 2 Screenings?
In a statement shared on Instagram, York Cinemas said screenings would stop with effect from October 21 due to circumstances beyond its control. The exhibitor maintained that it had fulfilled its financial commitments and completed the required payments.
However, it said the necessary KDMs had not arrived from North American distributors Shloka Entertainments and Prathyangira Cinemas, following the required authorisation from production house Sun Pictures.
KDMs are digital security keys that allow cinemas to play encrypted movie files on authorised equipment during specified periods. Without valid keys, theatres cannot technically continue screenings.
York Cinemas said it had made efforts to resolve the issue and keep the film running but had not received the required authorisation. The cinema also apologised to customers for the inconvenience.
As of October 21, neither the distributors nor Sun Pictures had publicly responded to the development.
Jailer 2 Box Office Collection Crosses ₹540 Crore
According to figures cited in the report, Jailer 2 recorded net collections of ₹289.05 crore and a gross of ₹338.45 crore in India during its first six days. Its overseas gross reportedly reached ₹204 crore, taking worldwide collections to approximately ₹542.45 crore.
The film's opening run benefited from the festive season and the absence of competing Tamil releases during the period.
Rajinikanth Leads an Ensemble Cast
Apart from Rajinikanth, the film features Ramya Krishnan, Mirnaa, Rithwik, Yogi Babu, SJ Suryah, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Vidya Balan and Namo Narayana. Mohanlal, Shiva Rajkumar, Jackie Shroff, Hrithik Roshan and Vijay Sethupathi appear in cameo roles.
The duration of the Canadian screening disruption remains unclear. Any resumption will depend on the issue involving the required digital authorisation being resolved.
