The Kriti Sanon Raksha Bandhan ad controversy resurfaced in the trailer for Kareena Kapoor Khan’s What Women Want Season 6, where the actor reflected on the backlash surrounding her outfit. Speaking to Kareena, Kriti said she was surprised that her choli had become the subject of a prime-time television panel discussion.
“I couldn’t believe when my choli had become like a six-person panel discussion on prime-time news,” Kriti said in the trailer, with Kareena responding, “I know.”
Towards the end of the conversation, Kriti was asked what women really want. Her answer was direct: “To not be judged, and people should mind their business.”
What Triggered the Raksha Bandhan Ad Controversy?
The controversy began after jewellery brand GIVA released a Raksha Bandhan campaign featuring Kriti. The advertisement showed the actor celebrating the festival by tying a Rakhi to her brother as well as her pet dog.
Kriti appeared in an Indo-Western outfit featuring an off-white bralette-style blouse, cape and draped skirt. While the campaign attempted to present Raksha Bandhan through a contemporary lens, some viewers questioned whether the outfit was appropriate for the traditional festival.
The inclusion of the pet dog also became part of the discussion. Following the backlash, the advertisement was taken down.
Kriti Sanon Responded to the Backlash
Kriti later addressed the controversy on Instagram, arguing that the meaning of a festival should be associated with its emotions and traditions rather than clothing.
She explained that Raksha Bandhan represents a bond of protection and said that she and her sister also tie Rakhi to each other. She added that their prayers and promises extend to their dogs because they are considered family.
Kriti also questioned why women’s clothing continues to be linked to their relationship with culture and traditions, arguing that cultural values are not determined by a woman’s outfit.
GIVA Founder Defended the Campaign’s Intent
GIVA founder Ishendra Agarwal also addressed the controversy surrounding the advertisement’s removal.
He said the brand’s belief in the campaign’s intent remained unchanged and clarified that the decision to take down the advertisement was primarily made to protect the company’s employees and stores.
Meanwhile, Kriti was most recently seen in the romantic comedy-drama Cocktail 2, alongside Shahid Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna.
The full conversation featuring Kriti Sanon and Kareena Kapoor will be part of What Women Want Season 6, which also features guests including Ali Fazal, Neha Kakkar, Maheep Kapoor, Bhavna Pandey, Micky Contractor and Mira Rajput.
