West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has written to Gyanesh Kumar, urging the Election Commission of India to immediately stop the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in the state. The move has intensified political tensions ahead of upcoming elections, with the ruling party alleging serious procedural lapses that could affect voters’ rights.
In her letter, Banerjee raised concerns over what she described as widespread irregularities in the voter roll revision process. She alleged that the exercise was being carried out in an unplanned, arbitrary and ad hoc manner, without adequate safeguards to ensure transparency or fairness. According to the Chief Minister, the manner in which the SIR is being implemented could result in large sections of eligible voters being excluded from the electoral rolls.
Banerjee warned that such exclusions could amount to “mass disenfranchisement” and pose a serious threat to democratic participation in the state. She argued that voter list revisions must be conducted with extreme care, especially in a politically sensitive environment, and said any flawed process could cause irreversible damage to public trust in the electoral system.
The Chief Minister further questioned the timing and execution of the revision exercise, suggesting that it lacked proper planning and clarity at the ground level. She urged the Election Commission to intervene immediately, pause the process, and conduct a thorough review before proceeding further.
The issue has also sparked a sharp response from the All India Trinamool Congress, which accused the poll body of acting in a biased manner. A senior party representative criticised the Election Commission in strong terms, alleging that it was functioning to serve the interests of a particular political party rather than upholding constitutional neutrality. The Trinamool Congress has demanded that the Special Intensive Revision be scrapped or cancelled altogether.
Party leaders maintain that their opposition to the exercise is rooted in protecting the democratic rights of the people of West Bengal. They argue that any errors in voter rolls disproportionately affect marginalised communities, migrant workers and economically weaker sections, who may struggle to navigate complex verification procedures.
The Election Commission has not yet issued a detailed response to Banerjee’s letter. However, officials have previously stated that voter roll revisions are a routine administrative exercise aimed at ensuring accuracy and eliminating duplication. Such revisions, they argue, are carried out nationwide in accordance with established guidelines.
Political observers note that disputes over electoral rolls are not new but have taken on greater significance as elections draw closer. In West Bengal, where electoral contests are often fiercely fought, any controversy involving voter lists is likely to have major political implications.
Opposition parties have countered the Trinamool Congress’s allegations by asserting that accurate voter rolls are essential for free and fair elections. They have accused the state government of attempting to politicise a standard electoral process.
As the standoff continues, the issue is expected to remain in focus, with legal and political scrutiny intensifying in the coming days. Whether the Election Commission decides to pause, modify or continue the Special Intensive Revision in West Bengal could have far-reaching consequences for the state’s electoral landscape.
