ONGC Gas Leak Triggers Fire Scare in Andhra Village, Residents Evacuated in Konaseema

Panic broke out in parts of Ambedkar Konaseema in Andhra Pradesh after a suspected gas leak at an operational oil well triggered a fire scare, prompting authorities to evacuate nearby residents as a precautionary measure. The incident occurred on Monday at an oil well operated by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).

According to preliminary information, no casualties or injuries have been reported so far. However, the sudden release of gas reportedly caused fear among residents as it spread rapidly into surrounding residential areas, forcing officials to act swiftly to prevent any untoward incident.

Gas Spread Into Residential Areas

The incident was reported from Irsumanda village in Malikipuram mandal, where villagers noticed gas spreading like a thick mist and entering homes. Residents said the strong smell and visibility of the gas cloud led to immediate panic, with families rushing out of their houses to safer locations.

Officials said the suspected leak occurred while workover rig operations were underway at the oil well. Production at the well had reportedly halted, and during the maintenance process, a large volume of gas mixed with crude oil is believed to have gushed out with significant force. The gas then drifted toward the nearby habitation, triggering alarm among villagers.

Emergency Response and Evacuation

Upon being alerted by local residents, ONGC authorities, along with police and revenue officials, rushed to the spot. Security personnel cordoned off the area, while residents living close to the oil well were evacuated as a precaution. Families were temporarily shifted to safer locations to minimise exposure and reduce the risk of fire or explosion.

Officials said the situation is being closely monitored, with safety teams deployed to assess gas levels and stabilise the site. Fire safety arrangements have also been put in place to respond immediately if conditions worsen.

Authorities confirmed that the exact cause of the suspected gas leak and the extent of any damage are still being examined. A detailed technical assessment will be carried out once the area is declared fully safe.

Chief Minister Reviews Situation

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu took note of the incident and sought a detailed report on the situation. He spoke to senior ministers and officials to review developments and ensure that relief and precautionary measures were being implemented without delay.

The Chief Minister directed authorities to prioritise the safety of villagers and instructed officials to ensure that residents do not face hardship during evacuation. He also emphasised the need for constant coordination between district officials, emergency services and ONGC teams until the situation is fully brought under control.

Situation Under Watch

Local administration officials said the situation remains under control, but safety monitoring will continue until all risks are ruled out. Residents have been advised to stay away from the affected zone until further instructions are issued.

The incident has once again highlighted concerns over safety protocols around oil and gas installations located close to residential areas. Authorities said further action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation, including any corrective or preventive measures needed to avoid similar incidents in the future.
