Meghalaya Violence: 2 Killed in Garo Hills Poll Tensions, Army Deployed

Violence erupted in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district during tensions related to the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections, leaving two people dead after security forces opened fire to control a violent mob.

Authorities have deployed additional security personnel, and the Army has been requested to conduct a flag march in sensitive areas to restore normalcy.

Clashes Break Out During Election Tensions

The incident occurred in the Chibinang area of West Garo Hills, where clashes reportedly broke out between groups amid rising tensions linked to the upcoming council elections.

According to officials, the situation escalated when a crowd gathered and turned violent during protests connected to the nomination process for the GHADC polls.

Security forces attempted to disperse the gathering, but the situation intensified, leading to firing in which two people lost their lives.

Demand to Restrict Non-Tribal Participation

The unrest began a day earlier after former Phulbari legislator Estamur Momin was allegedly assaulted during protests.

Several groups have been demanding that non-tribal candidates should not contest or participate in the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections.

The issue has triggered tensions between tribal and non-tribal communities in the region.

Security Forces Step In

Police officials said the firing took place when security personnel tried to control the situation and disperse an unlawful gathering that had turned violent.

Following the incident, the West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner requested the Army to conduct a flag march to reassure residents and prevent further unrest.

Authorities have increased security presence across sensitive areas in the district.

Situation Being Closely Monitored

Local administration officials stated that the situation remains under close monitoring and additional forces have been deployed to maintain law and order.

Officials have also appealed to residents to maintain peace and avoid spreading rumours that could further escalate tensions.

Political Sensitivity Around Council Elections

The Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections are politically significant in the region, as the council plays an important role in governing local tribal areas and safeguarding traditional rights.

Issues related to representation, identity and participation in local governance often generate strong emotions among communities.

With the election process underway, authorities are focusing on preventing further disturbances and ensuring that the electoral process proceeds peacefully.
