Veteran actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty has been given a Cabinet-rank advisory role in the West Bengal government.

Mithun Chakraborty Bengal government advisor appointment marks a significant move in the state’s cultural and film administration. Veteran actor and BJP leader Mithun Chakraborty has been appointed as an Advisor to the West Bengal government, with the rank of a Cabinet Minister in the Information and Cultural Affairs Department.

The department is currently under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The announcement was made during an event connected with the centenary celebrations of legendary Bengali actor Uttam Kumar.

The appointment gives Chakraborty a formal role in the state administration at a time when the BJP-led government is placing greater emphasis on Bengal’s cultural heritage and film industry.

BJP’s Star Campaigner Gets Key Cultural Role

Chakraborty is among the most recognisable personalities in Indian cinema and has also emerged as a prominent BJP figure in West Bengal. He campaigned extensively for the party during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, following which the BJP defeated the Trinamool Congress and formed the state government.

His appointment comes as the new administration works to establish its cultural and governance priorities, particularly around Bengal’s film heritage and creative industries.

The state government has also been pushing plans to expand film and cultural infrastructure. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari recently laid the foundation stone for the Uttam Kumar Film Centre in New Town, Kolkata. The proposed facility is aimed at providing modern infrastructure for film production and related activities.

The government has additionally announced plans for a new state-of-the-art theatre complex, with the broader objective of strengthening Bengal’s cultural ecosystem and providing greater support to the film sector.

Chakraborty’s new position therefore places one of Bengal’s most prominent film personalities directly within the government’s cultural affairs framework.
