Mumbai Welcomes 2026 With Light Rain, Air Quality Improves
Mumbai welcomed the first morning of 2026 with unseasonal rainfall, bringing cooler weather and a noticeable improvement in air quality across the city.
According to available data, the Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 103 by late morning, placing it in the moderate category. The rain offered residents a refreshing start to the new year, with hazy skies and a pleasant breeze replacing the usual winter smog.
The showers, triggered by a western disturbance, began shortly before 6 am and affected Mumbai and parts of western Maharashtra. While some areas recorded moderate to heavy rainfall, others experienced only light drizzle. The intensity of the showers gradually eased after around 6.15 am.
The unexpected weather change sparked reactions on social media, with several users welcoming the cleaner air and cooler conditions.
