UP Man Presumed Dead Returns Home After 28 Years for SIR Documents

An extraordinary and emotional reunion unfolded in western Uttar Pradesh when a man presumed dead for nearly three decades suddenly returned to his hometown, leaving his family and neighbours stunned.

Sharif, an elderly resident of Khatauli town in Muzaffarnagar, reappeared after 28 years, not by chance but due to the need for official documents required for the ongoing SIR process. His brief return brought disbelief, relief, and overwhelming emotions to those who had long assumed he was no longer alive.

Sharif had gone missing in 1997 following the death of his first wife. He later remarried and moved to West Bengal. Initially, the family remained in contact through landline calls, but communication gradually faded. Repeated efforts by relatives to trace him at the address he had shared proved unsuccessful, and over time, the family accepted that he had likely passed away.

The documentation requirement for SIR prompted Sharif to return to Khatauli for the first time in nearly three decades. His sudden appearance led to large gatherings, with relatives, neighbours, and acquaintances rushing to meet him. Several family members, including close relatives, had died during his absence — news he learned only after returning home.

Family members revealed that they searched for Sharif for nearly 15 to 20 years across multiple locations in West Bengal, including Kharagpur and Asansol, but found no trace. When word spread that he had come back, many initially refused to believe it.

Sharif later said that financial hardship and limited communication facilities at the time of his second marriage led to the loss of contact with his family. After completing the required paperwork and meeting relatives, he returned to West Bengal, where he has lived with his wife and children for nearly three decades.
