The Budget Session of Parliament continues today with key legislative business expected in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is likely to move the Appropriation Bill in the Rajya Sabha, a crucial step that allows the government to withdraw funds from the Consolidated Fund of India to meet expenditure for the financial year.
Proceedings in both Houses are scheduled to begin at 11 am, with several important discussions and financial matters on the agenda.
In the Upper House, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is expected to table the Appropriation Bill, which is a key component of the Union Budget process.
The bill authorises the central government to withdraw money from the Consolidated Fund of India to meet expenses for the upcoming financial year. Without the approval of this bill, the government cannot legally spend funds allocated in the Union Budget.
The Appropriation Bill typically follows the passage of demands for grants and serves as the final step in approving government expenditure.
Meanwhile, in the Lok Sabha, members are expected to continue discussions on the demands for grants under the Ministry of Railways for the financial year 2026–27.
These discussions are part of the parliamentary process where lawmakers debate and approve budget allocations for various ministries and government departments.
Members of Parliament may raise questions about infrastructure development, railway safety, expansion plans, and funding priorities during the debate.
The previous day’s proceedings in the Rajya Sabha witnessed a heated exchange between senior leaders over the issue of cooking gas supply.
Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge criticised the central government over the alleged shortage of LPG cylinders in several regions. He accused the government of failing to prepare adequately to handle supply disruptions.
In response, Union Minister JP Nadda defended the government’s actions and accused the opposition of politicising the issue. He said that spreading panic over supply concerns could create unnecessary confusion among citizens.
Today’s parliamentary session is expected to focus largely on budget-related discussions and legislative approvals linked to government expenditure.
Approval of the Appropriation Bill is considered an essential step in implementing the Union Budget and ensuring the smooth functioning of government programmes and public spending.
Members of both Houses may also raise additional policy concerns and questions related to economic issues, infrastructure development, and welfare schemes during the session.
The Budget Session is one of the most important parliamentary sessions of the year because it determines how government funds will be allocated across ministries and development programmes.
During this period, Parliament debates financial proposals, scrutinises government spending, and approves legislation required to implement the budget.
As discussions continue, lawmakers are expected to address both fiscal priorities and policy challenges affecting the country.
