Ro-Ko Mentality: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli Renew ODI Focus Ahead of South Africa Series

As India prepares for the ODI series against South Africa, senior batters Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have opened up about their renewed enthusiasm for the 50-over format—now the only format in which the duo features after retiring from T20Is post the 2024 World Cup triumph and stepping away from Test cricket earlier in 2025.

The pair recently returned during the white-ball tour of Australia, where their individual performances varied. However, they combined brilliantly in the final ODI, with Rohit scoring 121 and Kohli contributing 74, helping India clinch the match.

With the 2027 ODI World Cup in sight, the South Africa series marks an important milestone in their long-term plans.

Mindset Behind Longevity

In a video posted by the BCCI during the team’s preparation in Ranchi, Kohli emphasised the importance of daily discipline.

“You get stronger mentally and physically by putting in the work. It’s a constant process every day of your life,” he said.

Rohit highlighted that his motivation remains unchanged whenever he wears the Indian jersey:
“The drive and willingness are always there each time you represent your country.”

‘Ro-Ko Mentality’: Commitment at 100 Percent

Kohli explained that he never enters a series unless he is at full readiness.

“Once I make myself available, I arrive at 100 percent capacity. I’ve never entered a series at even 95 percent.”

Rohit added that his mindset today is the same as when he first played for India at age 20:
“The drive to do well and give your best has remained exactly the same.”

Playing Every Game Like a Debut

Despite massive career numbers—Kohli with 14,255 runs in 305 ODIs and Rohit with 11,370 runs in 276 ODIs—both stars maintain a beginner’s mindset.

“I look at every game like I’m making my debut,” Rohit said.

For Kohli, staying balanced is the secret:
“Your routines can’t depend on results. Results are a byproduct of hard work.”

Focus Ahead of South Africa Series

Rohit concluded by saying that his drive never fades—regardless of whether he returns after a one-month break or a six-month gap.

The Ro-Ko pair is now back together after a brief break, ready to anchor India’s ODI ambitions as they continue their journey toward the next World Cup.
