In a deeply disturbing case from Tamil Nadu, police have uncovered an elaborate murder plot in which two sons allegedly used a live snake to kill their own father, staging the crime as an accidental snake bite to claim insurance money worth nearly ₹3 crore. The shocking incident took place in Tiruvallur district and has raised serious concerns about insurance fraud and premeditated crime disguised as natural death.
The victim, a 56-year-old government employee working as a laboratory assistant, was found dead at his residence in Pothathurpettai on the night of October 22. According to initial accounts, he was bitten on the neck by a snake while asleep. Since snakebite-related deaths are not uncommon in rural pockets of Tamil Nadu, the incident was first treated as an accident.
However, the case took a dramatic turn after insurance companies flagged inconsistencies in the claim documents submitted by the family. Investigators soon discovered that the deceased had taken as many as 11 insurance policies over a short span, amounting to a total coverage of nearly ₹3 crore. This unusually high number of policies immediately triggered suspicion, prompting a deeper probe.
Police investigations revealed that the victim had also met with an accident just weeks before his death, a detail that further strengthened doubts around the circumstances. Officials began analysing call detail records, financial transactions, and digital communication linked to the deceased and his family members.
Technical evidence reportedly established repeated contact between the victim’s sons and several other individuals in the days leading up to the incident. Under sustained interrogation, investigators uncovered that the accused had allegedly procured a snake and deliberately released it near the victim while he was asleep, ensuring a fatal bite.
According to police sources, the murder was carefully planned to resemble an accidental death, allowing the accused to file insurance claims without raising immediate suspicion. The use of a snake was intended to exploit the assumption that such deaths occur naturally in certain regions.
Based on corroborating evidence, including call records and confessional statements, police have arrested six individuals so far. Those taken into custody include the victim’s two sons and others who allegedly assisted in arranging the snake and executing the plan. Investigators are now working to determine how the snake was sourced, transported, and handled without attracting attention.
Authorities are also examining whether similar attempts were made earlier or if the accused were advised by external agents familiar with insurance loopholes. Further scrutiny is underway to identify if insurance agents, middlemen, or others played any indirect role.
The case has sent shockwaves across Tamil Nadu, not only due to the brutality of the crime but also because of the calculated exploitation of insurance mechanisms. Legal experts note that the incident underscores the growing sophistication of financial crimes masked as accidents, highlighting the need for stricter verification in high-value insurance claims.
Police have stated that further arrests are possible as the investigation progresses. For now, the case stands as one of the most chilling examples of betrayal, where familial trust was weaponised for financial gain.
