Five police personnel in Tamil Nadu have faced disciplinary action within a week in separate cases involving allegations of demanding or accepting bribes. The action ranges from suspension to dismissal, with alleged payments in the cases ranging between ₹1,000 and ₹10,000.

Cop allegedly sought ₹1,000 through Google Pay

Head constable Sorna Raj of Melapalayam Police Station in Tirunelveli City was suspended after allegedly demanding ₹1,000 from a two-wheeler rider during a vehicle check. According to the reported findings, the rider had incomplete documents and Sorna Raj allegedly shared his Google Pay number to receive the money.

In Chennai, sub-inspector Sivaraj and constable Vivek of North Beach Police Station were suspended following an Internal Vigilance Cell inquiry into an alleged ₹10,000 Google Pay payment. The money was allegedly received from the owner of a stolen two-wheeler in connection with its release.

More officers face disciplinary action

A sub-inspector posted at Madhavaram Police Station was also suspended after a preliminary vigilance inquiry into a complaint alleging a bribe demand. The department said the charge was established during the inquiry.

The strongest disciplinary action was taken against sub-inspector Marishwaran of Puzhal Police Station, who was dismissed from service following a departmental inquiry into allegations of demanding and accepting bribes. The allegations date back to 2024, when he was posted at Anna Nagar Police Station. The departmental proceedings reportedly found the charges to be true and cited repeated instances of alleged bribery.

The five cases involve different circumstances, including vehicle checks and the release of a stolen vehicle. The latest actions come amid continued scrutiny of corruption allegations within the Tamil Nadu police force.

In February, the state police chief had directed officers to review prolonged suspensions involving personnel facing disciplinary, vigilance or criminal proceedings on a case-by-case basis.
