North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s daughter, Kim Ju Ae, has made her first publicly reported visit to the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, a highly symbolic site that serves as the mausoleum of the country’s former leaders. The appearance has intensified speculation that she is being gradually positioned for a future leadership role within the world’s most secretive state.
State media images released on Friday showed Kim Ju Ae accompanying her parents during a New Year visit to the mausoleum in Pyongyang, where North Korea’s founding leader Kim Il Sung and his son Kim Jong Il lie in state. The visit marked the first known occasion on which Kim Jong Un’s daughter has been shown paying respects at the mausoleum, a ritual deeply tied to legitimising dynastic authority in the country.
In the photographs, Kim Ju Ae was seen standing prominently between her father and mother Ri Sol Ju, alongside senior party and military officials. Analysts say the positioning was deliberate, underlining her growing visibility at events linked to the regime’s ideological continuity and heritage.
Over the past three years, Kim Ju Ae has appeared with increasing frequency in state media, often at major military or national occasions. These appearances have fuelled speculation among experts and intelligence officials in South Korea that she could be groomed as North Korea’s fourth-generation leader. Her presence at the Kumsusan mausoleum is being seen as another step in that carefully managed public introduction.
Observers note that such visits are traditionally reserved for figures who symbolise continuity of the ruling Kim family line. Kim Jong Un himself routinely visits the mausoleum on major anniversaries and political milestones to reinforce the legitimacy of his leadership through dynastic lineage. Bringing his daughter into this ritual has therefore been widely interpreted as a powerful signal.
Some analysts believe the timing of the visit may be linked to internal political considerations, including preparations ahead of future ruling party meetings. By presenting his daughter at a site associated with reverence, loyalty, and historical authority, Kim Jong Un may be shaping public perception long before any formal announcement regarding succession is made.
At the same time, experts caution against drawing definitive conclusions. Kim Ju Ae is believed to have been born in the early 2010s and is still a minor, with no official position within the ruling Workers' Party of Korea. North Korea has never publicly confirmed her age, and officials in South Korea have maintained that it is too early to label her as a designated successor.
Despite this, the regime’s efforts to portray a “stable ruling family” are becoming increasingly evident. Kim Ju Ae has attended New Year celebrations, major weapons tests, and even accompanied her father on a high-profile overseas visit to Beijing, marking her first appearance outside North Korea.
While questions remain about the roles of Kim Jong Un’s other children, analysts agree that Kim Ju Ae’s expanding public presence reflects a long-term strategy. Whether symbolic or preparatory, her appearance at the Kumsusan Palace of the Sun adds a new layer to the ongoing debate over leadership succession in North Korea.
