TVK Approaches Supreme Court for Independent Karur Stampede Probe

Karur, Tamil Nadu: The Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has approached the Supreme Court, demanding an independent investigation led by a former Supreme Court judge into the Karur stampede that claimed 41 lives.

The party challenged the Madras High Court’s directive for a Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by senior IPS officer Asra Garg, alleging the SIT is biased against TVK. The petition contends that the High Court’s observations—claiming that party chief Vijay “fled from the scene” and that the party showed no remorse—have prejudiced the ongoing investigation.

TVK also suggested the possibility of a pre-planned conspiracy by miscreants at the rally, which it believes has not been properly explored. The Madurai Bench of the High Court had earlier criticised TVK leaders for lapses during the event, including footage showing a bus running over two-wheelers without stopping and controversial social media posts by party leader Aadhav Arjuna.

Speaking to reporters, TVK propaganda secretary Arun Raj said that permission for the rally had been submitted to the DGP and that Vijay has been in contact with 33 affected families via video call, assuring them he will meet them in person. He added that all victims told Vijay there was no fault on his part and encouraged him to continue his public work.
