Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath said sporting talent has gained greater access to government jobs since 2017, with 470 athletes selected for police recruitment.

Yogi Adityanath said merit and sporting achievements are driving sports quota recruitment in Uttar Pradesh.

The UP sports quota has undergone a major shift since 2017, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Thursday, claiming that sporting achievement and merit now play a greater role in recruitment and employment opportunities for athletes.

In a social media post, Adityanath said appointment letters would be handed over to 470 sportspersons selected under the skilled sportsperson quota in the Uttar Pradesh Police.

The selected candidates include 43 Sub-Inspectors in the Civil Police, 295 Civil Police Constables and 132 Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) Constables.

Adityanath said the recruitment reflected what he described as a transformation in Uttar Pradesh’s sporting culture since 2017. He claimed that before 2017, the sports quota had been neglected and that recruitment discussions focused more on “recommendations and influence” than sporting talent.

The assessment is the Chief Minister’s political characterization of the earlier recruitment system and has not been independently established in the material provided.

Over 534 Sportspersons Recruited Across Departments

According to Adityanath, more than 534 sportspersons have so far been directly recruited across different government departments.

He also said the recruitment process for another 866 sportspersons in the Uttar Pradesh Police is currently progressing.

The Chief Minister linked the recruitment policy to the state government’s broader approach towards sports, arguing that government employment can provide athletes with both professional opportunities and financial security.

Uttar Pradesh’s official sports policy also provides financial assistance to athletes at different stages, along with provisions including health insurance and pension support for eligible sportspersons.

Sports Policy and Employment Opportunities

Adityanath said the sports policy introduced after 2017 had contributed to a new sporting culture in the state by connecting sporting achievements with employment opportunities.

He said the approach was intended to make young people more aware of opportunities available to talented athletes and encourage them to pursue sports alongside the prospect of a stable career.

The Chief Minister’s remarks come as the state continues to expand recruitment opportunities linked to sporting performance. The Uttar Pradesh government’s official information portal continues to highlight sports and employment-related initiatives as part of its broader policy framework.
