Karnataka Christian Leaders Seek Anti-Conversion Law Repeal, 1% Exclusive Quota

A delegation of Christian leaders from Karnataka met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge in Bengaluru and presented a list of demands concerning the community. The delegation urged him to pursue the repeal of the Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Act, commonly referred to as the anti-conversion law, and sought a 1 per cent exclusive reservation for Christians.

The delegation was led by Archbishop of Bangalore Most Rev. Dr. Peter Machado. Among the issues raised were greater political and administrative representation for Christians and the nomination of a community representative to the Karnataka Legislative Council.

The leaders also sought representation on government boards, corporations and other statutory and nominated bodies. They argued that sections of the Christian community continue to face socio-economic difficulties and requested a dedicated 1 per cent quota under the Backward Class category to improve access to education, employment and development opportunities.

The repeal of the 2021 Freedom of Religion legislation was another major demand. The delegation raised concerns about provisions of the law and what it described as their impact on citizens' constitutional rights to practise and propagate their faith.

According to the delegation, Kharge heard the concerns and assured the representatives that he would raise the issues with Karnataka government leaders. He also indicated that necessary directions would be given for consideration of the demands and further action.

The delegation included senior church representatives and community members from across Karnataka. The leaders thanked Kharge for meeting them and expressed hope that the state government would consider their demands.
