Baloch Rebels Release New Video of Captive Soldiers After Pakistan Denial

A separatist militant group operating in Pakistan’s Balochistan region has released a new video purportedly showing several Pakistani Army personnel in captivity, intensifying tensions after reported denials by the military that any soldiers were missing.

The footage, circulated online, shows a group of men kneeling on rugged terrain with armed individuals standing behind them. The militants claim the detainees are Pakistani soldiers captured during recent operations. The release comes just days before a February 22 deadline set by the group for initiating negotiations for a proposed prisoner exchange.

Reports had earlier suggested that seven personnel were captured, but the latest video appears to show eight individuals. In the footage, the detainees display service identification cards and national identity documents, asserting that they were formally recruited and deployed by the army.

One of the captured men, speaking emotionally, says he served the country but feels abandoned after authorities allegedly denied their status. The detainees appealed to Pakistan’s military leadership and government officials to acknowledge them and begin negotiations to secure their release.

The militant group has demanded a prisoner exchange involving Baloch detainees and warned that failure to begin talks before the deadline could put the captives’ lives at risk. The group’s media wing reiterated that negotiations must begin immediately to prevent escalation.

Pakistani military officials have reportedly stated that no soldiers are missing or in militant custody, contradicting the claims made in the video. As of now, there has been no fresh official response to the latest footage.

The development highlights ongoing tensions in Balochistan, a resource-rich province in southwestern Pakistan bordering Afghanistan and Iran. Separatist groups in the region have long alleged political marginalisation and exploitation of local natural resources, while Islamabad maintains that development efforts are aimed at improving regional stability and economic growth.

The Baloch Liberation Army is among several insurgent groups active in the province and has been designated as a terrorist organisation by Pakistan. The insurgency has persisted for decades, marked by periodic attacks, security operations, and political disputes over autonomy and resource control.

The emergence of the video adds urgency to the situation and raises concerns about the safety of the detainees and the potential escalation of conflict if negotiations do not take place.

Observers note that such incidents can complicate regional security dynamics and underscore the need for dialogue, humanitarian safeguards, and conflict resolution mechanisms to prevent further violence.
