Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently shared a personal anecdote that highlighted an unexpected India connection in his love story. During a joint press conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Netanyahu recalled that his early date with his wife, Sara Netanyahu, took place at an Indian restaurant in Tel Aviv.
The light-hearted remark came after bilateral talks and the signing of key Memorandums of Understanding between India and Israel. Ending his address on a warm note, Netanyahu said he owed India a “great personal debt,” linking his family story to Indian cuisine.
“When I met Sara for the first time, I think our first or second date was at an Indian restaurant in Tel Aviv,” he said. He described the meal as unforgettable and added that the excellent food contributed to what turned out to be a meaningful and lasting relationship.
While Netanyahu did not mention the restaurant by name during the press conference, it is widely known to be Tandoori Tel Aviv, owned by restaurateur Reena Pushkarna. The restaurant has long been associated with Indian-Israeli cultural ties and is popular among diplomats and public figures.
In earlier interviews, the restaurateur revealed that Netanyahu had pointed out the exact table — Table No. 8 — where he and Sara had their first date. According to her, the Israeli Prime Minister remains fond of Indian cuisine and frequently orders dishes such as butter chicken and kadhai chicken.
This is not the first time Netanyahu has referred to his Indian restaurant memory in the context of India-Israel relations. He previously shared the anecdote in 2017 while hosting PM Modi during a landmark visit to Israel. The repeated mention underscores how cultural elements, particularly food, often become subtle yet powerful tools of diplomacy.
Indian cuisine has gained strong popularity in Israel over the years, especially among travellers and locals who have experienced Indian culture firsthand. Restaurants like Tandoori Tel Aviv have played a role in strengthening people-to-people connections between the two nations.
Netanyahu’s personal story added a human touch to formal diplomatic proceedings. In international relations, symbolic gestures — whether through attire, cuisine, or shared memories — can reinforce political partnerships.
By recalling his first date at an Indian restaurant, Netanyahu highlighted how cultural exchange goes beyond trade agreements and strategic cooperation. It reflects shared experiences and mutual appreciation that shape long-term ties.
As India and Israel continue to expand cooperation across technology, defense, and agriculture, moments like these show that diplomacy can sometimes begin over a simple meal — and leave a lasting impression.
