Varam first impression: Director Aditya Mandala’s Telugu fantasy drama Varam has introduced an unusual premise that blends supernatural possibilities with everyday struggles, political pressure and emotional relationships. Streaming on JioHotstar, the series centres on a man whose life changes after he gains access to news from the following day.
The title, which translates to “boon”, raises a central question: can an extraordinary gift truly improve someone’s life, or can the desire to exploit it turn the blessing into a curse?
A Boon That Could Change Raju’s Life
Vishwadev Rachakonda plays Raju, a man living in a slum who operates a pay-and-use toilet. His family struggles financially, with his father battling alcoholism and his mother working as a domestic help to support the household.
Raju’s circumstances take an unexpected turn when a news app appears on his phone, allowing him to read events before they happen. The discovery gives him an opportunity to change his fortunes and potentially help others. However, the series has only begun exploring how he might use this unusual advantage and what consequences could follow.
His life also revolves around Satya, played by Shivathmika Rajashekar. A sex worker who loves Raju, Satya provides an emotional dimension to the fantasy-driven narrative. Their relationship could become more significant as the story develops, particularly if the show explores her ambitions and personal struggles beyond their romance.
Political Pressure Adds to the Conflict
Srinivas Avasarala plays local politician Tripathy, who blackmails Raju into working for him and continues to mistreat him. This unequal power dynamic introduces another layer of conflict, potentially placing Raju’s newfound ability at the centre of a larger struggle.
The idea of an ordinary man receiving extraordinary powers recalls elements of Rajinikanth’s 2002 film Baba. However, Varam is still establishing its own identity, with the first two episodes focusing primarily on the premise and its emerging conflicts.
Is Varam Worth Watching?
Vishwadev anchors the series with a character whose difficult circumstances leave room for an emotional performance. Shivathmika also fits the role of Satya, although her character could benefit from greater narrative depth as the story progresses.
With only two episodes available, the series has yet to fully explore its fantasy elements or establish the long-term consequences of Raju’s discovery. Whether his ability becomes a genuine blessing or ultimately brings trouble remains an open question.
Varam has an intriguing starting point, but its success will depend on how effectively it develops the characters, stakes and central mystery. New episodes stream on JioHotstar every Thursday.
