Mika Singh has appealed to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to intervene in the controversy involving his elder brother, singer Daler Mehndi, and BJP MLA Subodh Uniyal. The dispute erupted after Uniyal publicly accused Mehndi of performing under the influence of alcohol at a Navratri event in Tehri.
In a post on X on October 23, Mika said he had spoken to Dhami and requested that the chief minister ask Uniyal to release a clarification video and apologise to Mehndi for the allegation. Mika maintained that misunderstandings could occur but should be resolved respectfully to protect the singer’s dignity and reputation.
He expressed confidence in Dhami’s leadership and said he hoped a simple apology would bring the matter to a close.
How the Daler Mehndi Controversy Began
The controversy followed Mehndi’s performance at a Navratri event in Tehri the previous weekend. Uniyal interrupted the singer on stage and questioned his ability to perform, alleging that he was not in a fit condition.
The MLA reportedly asked Mehndi how he could sing when he was struggling to speak. He also accused the singer of disrespecting the religious occasion and the audience by performing while allegedly drunk.
In subsequent interviews, Uniyal said the organisers had paid Mehndi ₹35 lakh for the performance. He argued that if the singer was feeling unwell, he could have chosen not to perform.
These claims remain allegations, and the controversy has since expanded beyond the original performance.
Mika Says His Brother Was Unwell
Defending his brother, Mika said Daler Mehndi had been unwell for some time, which could explain why his performance did not meet expectations. He objected to the public interruption and alleged humiliation, arguing that the incident was disrespectful not only to Mehndi but also to the wider artist community.
Several entertainment industry figures have reportedly supported Mehndi, including Anupam Kher, Ila Arun, Shaan, Kapil Sharma, Badshah, Gurdas Maan, Alisha Chinai and Rajpal Yadav.
The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 22, condemning the treatment of the singer during the event.
BJP MLA Yet to Respond
Uniyal has not publicly commented further on the controversy, according to the source report. Mika’s request now places attention on whether the chief minister will intervene and whether the MLA will issue the requested clarification or apology.
Daler Mehndi rose to prominence in the 1990s with popular Punjabi pop and bhangra-inspired songs, including Bolo Ta Ra Ra, Tunak Tunak Tun and Ho Jayegi Balle Balle. His music has also featured in Bollywood films, including Rang De Basanti, Uri: The Surgical Strike and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion.
