Careers in Sound Healing: How Sound Therapy Is Emerging as a Modern Wellness Profession

Sound healing, once confined to spiritual retreats and traditional practices rooted in Vedanta and mantra philosophy, has now evolved into a recognised career pathway within India’s expanding wellness industry. Blending ancient sound traditions with modern neuroscience, the field is attracting students, therapists, yoga practitioners, and corporate professionals seeking holistic healing expertise.

Experts note that sound therapy is gaining strong acceptance both in India and globally, as practices such as sound baths, frequency-based healing, and breathwork-integrated sessions become mainstream in wellness centres and corporate programmes. According to Avantika Kochar, Director of Wellness at Mulberry Shades Bengaluru Nandi Hills, the discipline today is shaped by both lineage-based wisdom and practitioner innovation.

Training in breathwork, yin yoga, Vedanta studies, and indigenous sound instruments—such as the didgeridoo—has emerged as essential for aspiring sound therapists. The practice draws equally from spirituality and science, leaning on concepts like neuroplasticity to explain how sound frequencies help the brain rewire and restore balance.

Live sound healing sessions continue to hold stronger transformative impact than app-based digital sound tools, as in-person experiences engage the senses, ground the body, and activate parasympathetic relaxation.

Practitioners say sound therapy can trigger profound emotional and somatic shifts. However, challenges persist, including building credibility, standardising certification, and maintaining authenticity in a rapidly commercialising wellness ecosystem.
