The CBSE digital payments initiative has asked affiliated schools to expand digital payment facilities across school-related financial activities while improving awareness of safe online transactions. The advisory follows a communication from the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance and focuses on making digital payments more accessible to students, parents and school staff.

Digital payments across school services

The Central Board of Secondary Education has advised schools to provide digital payment options at multiple touch-points, including school fees, canteens, libraries and other services. Schools may use platforms and instruments such as UPI and RuPay cards to facilitate transactions.

For institutions operating in areas with limited internet connectivity, the advisory suggests considering options such as UPI Lite, UPI LiteX and UPI 123PAY. Schools have also been encouraged to conduct demonstrations and provide assisted payment facilities for users who may need help with digital transactions.

BBPS and ERP integration

CBSE has suggested that schools consider onboarding the Bharat Bill Payment System (BBPS) to support standardised and interoperable fee collection. Schools may also integrate payment facilities with their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems to streamline recurring financial transactions.

The advisory further highlights the importance of digital financial literacy. Schools have been encouraged to include digital payment awareness in teacher training programmes and conduct financial literacy activities for students.

Parents may also be included through awareness programmes held on school campuses, during events and through parent-teacher interactions. The objective is not only to increase digital payment adoption but also to help members of the school community understand safer and more convenient ways to use digital financial services.

CBSE has stated that the advisory was issued with the approval of the Competent Authority. The Board's latest communication therefore combines digital payment infrastructure with awareness and assisted support to encourage safer adoption across affiliated schools.
