Deepti Sharma Felicitated in Lucknow After DSP Appointment for World Cup Heroics

India’s World Cup hero Deepti Sharma received a grand felicitation at the Uttar Pradesh Police Headquarters in Lucknow on Friday, marking her official induction as Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) under the sports quota. The celebration recognised her stellar performance as Player of the Tournament during India’s historic Women’s ODI World Cup victory and her transition into public service.

The ceremony, held at the Gomtinagar Extension headquarters, was attended by senior police officials, including Director General of Police (DGP) Rajeev Krishna, who praised Deepti for bringing pride to both the state and the nation.

DGP Krishna highlighted her journey as a reflection of discipline, resilience and national dedication. He noted that Deepti’s contributions echo India’s unforgettable cricketing milestones—from the men’s 1983 World Cup triumph to the women’s victory over seven-time champions Australia. According to him, Deepti’s rise has strengthened the belief among young girls—especially in Uttar Pradesh—that world-class sporting achievements are within reach.

He also emphasised the state government’s sports-friendly policies under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, which have opened structured pathways for exceptional athletes to join the police force. Krishna pointed out that the sports quota has already brought several prominent athletes into the ranks, helping inspire a culture of excellence within the department. He urged children of police personnel to follow Deepti’s example, describing her discipline and willpower as lessons for the next generation.

Addressing the gathering, Deepti expressed heartfelt gratitude for the honour. She described the moment as deeply personal, recalling that joining the police force had long been a dream for her family. Wearing the uniform for the first time, she said, was an experience she would cherish for life. Deepti paid special tribute to her elder brother, Sumit Sharma, crediting him for guiding her throughout her career.

She also thanked Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for policies that support athletes with employment opportunities, recognition and financial assistance. Senior officials including DG Training Rajeev Sabharwal, DG Cyber Crime/CB-CID Vinod Kumar Singh, and ADG Law & Order Amitabh Yash were also present during the felicitation.

Earlier in the day, Deepti met Chief Minister Adityanath to share the pride of India’s maiden Women’s ODI World Cup win. Meanwhile, at a separate briefing, Cabinet Minister Suresh Khanna confirmed that the state Cabinet had passed resolutions congratulating the Indian women’s cricket team for the landmark title, with special mention of Deepti’s decisive role.

With her appointment as DSP, Deepti Sharma now carries dual responsibility—representing India on the cricket field and serving the people of Uttar Pradesh off it. Her journey continues to inspire athletes nationwide.
