A viral video depicting religious prayers offered inside an under-construction municipal building in Joshimath, Uttarakhand, has ignited a significant local controversy. The incident, which reportedly occurred in the Meeth Bazaar area, has drawn sharp criticism from local organizations and prompted an immediate administrative review to prevent communal tensions in the sensitive Himalayan town.
The controversy began late Wednesday evening when a group of individuals was filmed offering namaz inside a hall of the newly developing Nagar Palika building. According to local residents and administrative reports, the structure is currently being constructed with the specific purpose of serving as a Table Tennis (TT) hall for local athletes.
As the footage circulated across social media platforms, it raised immediate questions regarding the use of government-owned, public infrastructure for private religious practices. The fact that the building is still under construction further fueled the debate over security lapses and unauthorized access to municipal property.
In response to the growing public outcry, representatives from various local organizations met with the police administration and Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Chandrashekhar Vashishtha on Thursday. During the meeting, community leaders expressed their formal objections, labeling the event as a serious administrative oversight by the Nagar Palika.
SDM Chandrashekhar Vashishtha confirmed that the administration has taken full cognizance of the matter. He emphasized that an internal review is underway to determine how the gathering took place without authorization. The SDM issued a public appeal for communal harmony, urging all parties to maintain a peaceful and cordial atmosphere while the investigation proceeds. He further assured the public that measures would be implemented to ensure such lapses in government building protocols do not recur.
Local political leaders have characterized the event as a "major lapse" in the supervision of municipal projects. Statements from local representatives suggest that if such incidents are repeated, it could lead to large-scale protests and agitation.
Joshimath, often referred to as the gateway to several Himalayan shrines, remains a religiously and strategically sensitive zone. The administration is currently working to balance the enforcement of public building regulations with the need to maintain social stability. For now, security around the construction site has been tightened to prevent further unauthorized gatherings as the town returns to a state of cautious normalcy.
