Veteran filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has once again stirred debate in the Indian film industry with his bold praise for Dhurandhar, the action thriller starring Ranveer Singh and directed by Aditya Dhar. According to Varma, the film has effectively disrupted the long-standing dominance of South Indian cinema in the pan-India action space, and he believes its sequel will intensify that impact even further.
In recent comments and social media posts, Varma claimed that Dhurandhar has reversed what he described as the “South cinema invasion” of Bollywood. The filmmaker went a step further by asserting that the upcoming second installment, scheduled for release in March, would be even more unsettling for competing industries. His remarks have sparked intense discussion online, with reactions ranging from enthusiastic agreement to sharp criticism.
Varma explained that what sets Dhurandhar apart is its rejection of exaggerated hero worship, a trope commonly associated with contemporary pan-Indian action films. In his view, many large-scale commercial films elevate the protagonist to near-mythical status, often sidelining other characters and relying heavily on background scores to amplify the hero’s presence.
By contrast, Varma said Dhurandhar treats its lead actor as one character among many. He pointed out that Ranveer Singh often blends into the narrative rather than dominating it, allowing the story and supporting cast to carry equal weight. According to Varma, this narrative balance gives the film a more immersive and grounded feel.
Another key factor Varma highlighted is the film’s approach to action. He criticised the stylised combat commonly seen in large-scale action films, where physics is frequently ignored and single punches send multiple enemies flying. Dhurandhar, he said, breaks away from this formula by presenting raw, realistic fight sequences that feel physically plausible.
Varma argued that this shift towards realism could change audience expectations. Once viewers experience action that feels authentic and brutal, he believes exaggerated, gravity-defying combat may start to look artificial or even unintentionally humorous.
Despite his strong praise, Varma acknowledged that Dhurandhar is not revolutionary in terms of structure. The film still follows a familiar commercial template involving a heroic mission, romantic elements, flashbacks, a central antagonist, and revenge. However, he stressed that the film’s strength lies not in reinventing the storyline, but in how it tells that story.
According to Varma, the director shows no favoritism toward any single character. Every role, including antagonists, is given narrative importance and depth. This equal treatment, combined with intense action choreography and tight storytelling, is what he believes makes the film stand out.
The discussion is further amplified by the film’s commercial performance. Dhurandhar has reportedly crossed the ₹1,000 crore mark globally, making it the highest-grossing Indian film of the year. With such numbers backing Varma’s claims, anticipation around the sequel has grown significantly.
Whether Dhurandhar 2 will live up to the hype—or truly reshape pan-Indian cinema—remains to be seen. But for now, Ram Gopal Varma’s remarks have ensured that the conversation around the film extends far beyond the box office, positioning it as a cultural flashpoint in India’s evolving film landscape.
