DK Shivakumar Cancels World Economic Forum Visit Amid Karnataka Political Tussle

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar has cancelled his proposed visit to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, amid intensifying political developments within the state Congress unit. The decision has come at a time when political activity in Karnataka has gained momentum due to ongoing discussions around leadership dynamics and organisational responsibilities.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Shivakumar opted out of the high-profile global summit to focus on crucial political engagements within India. He is expected to hold a series of meetings with senior leaders of the All India Congress Committee in both Delhi and Bengaluru in the coming days. These interactions are seen as significant against the backdrop of growing political mobilisation by supporters of both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar.

Political Churn in Karnataka

While Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar have publicly maintained that the Congress leadership in Karnataka remains united, ground-level political activity suggests heightened competition among supporters of both leaders. Party insiders say that the Deputy Chief Minister’s decision to stay back reflects the need to manage internal coordination and prevent any escalation of factional pressures.

The cancellation of the Davos visit has also been linked to Shivakumar’s expanding political responsibilities within the state. As the president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, he continues to play a key role in managing party affairs, organisational strategy, and outreach initiatives across Karnataka.

Focus on MNREGA Campaign and Assembly Session

Apart from internal party meetings, Shivakumar is also set to spearhead the Karnataka government’s campaign against the Union Government over alleged issues related to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA). In this context, a five-day special session of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly is scheduled to begin on January 22, during which the state government plans to highlight concerns related to fund allocation and implementation.

Party sources say Shivakumar’s presence during this politically charged session is seen as essential, particularly as the Congress seeks to sharpen its narrative against the Centre while consolidating its governance agenda in the state.

Role in Assam Elections

In addition to his responsibilities in Karnataka, DK Shivakumar has been appointed as a senior Congress observer for the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam. He recently attended a meeting of Assam observers at 10 Rajaji Marg in Delhi, where election preparedness and ground-level feedback were discussed.

Speaking on the party’s prospects in Assam, Shivakumar expressed confidence in the Congress’s organisational strength and unity. He said that senior leaders, state leadership, and young party workers were working in coordination to present a strong alternative in the state. He also emphasised that the party was operating under the collective guidance of the central leadership to ensure a cohesive campaign.

Interaction With Rahul Gandhi

During the Assam observers’ meeting, Shivakumar also held a brief interaction with Rahul Gandhi on the sidelines. Sources indicated that the discussion touched upon the evolving political situation in Karnataka, though no official details were disclosed.

The meeting has added to speculation about the Congress high command’s active engagement with Karnataka leaders as it seeks to maintain balance within the state unit while preparing for upcoming electoral challenges elsewhere.

Davos Absence Raises Questions

Shivakumar’s absence from the World Economic Forum is being closely watched, as Karnataka has traditionally used the Davos platform to showcase its investment potential and attract global capital. However, party leaders maintain that political stability and organisational focus at home currently take precedence over international engagements.

As Karnataka navigates a sensitive political phase, Shivakumar’s decision underscores the importance of internal party management and strategic coordination. With assembly proceedings, national-level responsibilities, and state politics converging, the Deputy Chief Minister’s next moves are likely to play a key role in shaping the Congress’s political narrative in Karnataka in the months ahead.
