Elon Musk has highlighted the enormous financial demands of the artificial intelligence race, joking that building superintelligent AI could require all the money in the world. His remark came amid discussions about the growing cost of developing advanced AI systems and the funding required to maintain the computing infrastructure behind them.
Musk responded on X to comments by investor Chamath Palihapitiya about Anthropic, the company behind the Claude chatbot. Palihapitiya argued during an episode of the All-In Podcast that the AI startup could need a massive financial reserve to secure enough computing power to withstand a potential market downturn.
“Sometimes I wonder how many dollars there are in the world, because super intelligence seems to want them all,” Musk wrote.
Why Anthropic May Need $200 Billion
Palihapitiya suggested that Anthropic should raise at least $200 billion to secure the computing resources needed to compete in the AI industry. He argued that the company might need to offer investors more attractive terms to raise such a substantial amount.
He also suggested that a lower valuation could help attract the required capital, discussing a potential valuation of around $1.5 trillion rather than the $1.9 trillion to $2 trillion range.
These figures were presented as Palihapitiya’s estimates and proposals, rather than confirmed funding requirements or a completed financing deal.
The discussion reflects the scale of investment increasingly associated with companies developing advanced AI models, particularly as competition intensifies among major technology firms.
Computing Power and Energy Drive AI Costs
Building advanced AI systems requires more than software development. Companies need specialised processors, large data centres, electricity, cooling infrastructure and extensive computing resources to train and operate their models.
As models become more capable and demand for AI services grows, companies face pressure to expand their infrastructure. This can require substantial upfront investment, while operating costs continue as systems serve users and businesses.
Companies including OpenAI, Anthropic and Musk’s xAI are competing to develop increasingly advanced AI technologies, making access to computing resources a strategic priority.
The Expensive Race Towards Superintelligence
Musk’s remark captures a wider debate about whether the potential benefits of advanced AI will justify the extraordinary costs involved in developing it.
Artificial general intelligence (AGI) generally refers to AI capable of performing a broad range of intellectual tasks at human-level competence or beyond, although definitions vary. Superintelligence typically describes systems that surpass human capabilities across many important domains.
While these technologies could transform industries, their development depends on continued investment in computing infrastructure, energy and research. The funding discussion surrounding Anthropic illustrates how access to capital is becoming a central issue in the race to build more capable AI systems.
