F-35 Parts Diverted to Hong Kong, China Reportedly Takes Possession

Sensitive components from an Australian F-35 stealth fighter that were being shipped to the United States were unexpectedly diverted to Hong Kong, where Chinese authorities have reportedly taken possession of them. The incident has triggered investigations by the US and Australia over how the shipment was rerouted and whether sensitive military technology could have been exposed.

The shipment, handled by UPS in late May, reportedly included a cockpit canopy and weapons-bay door supplied by Lockheed Martin. Sources said the components were coated with radar-absorbing material designed to contribute to the F-35’s stealth characteristics. The shipment reportedly stopped in South Korea before being redirected to Hong Kong, although the reason for the diversion remains unclear.

The Pentagon has acknowledged a shipment issue involving unserviceable F-35 components and said efforts were underway to retrieve them and investigate what happened. Australia is also assisting the inquiry. Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles has said Canberra understands the missing components were not considered sensitive, while other reports have highlighted concerns about their potential technological value.

The incident has raised questions about F-35 supply-chain security and the possibility that China could obtain information useful for understanding the aircraft’s stealth technology or developing countermeasures. However, it remains unclear whether any classified technology or useful technical information was actually extracted from the components.

The case also comes amid longstanding scrutiny of the F-35’s global spare-parts network, with US authorities and lawmakers examining how such a shipment could have been diverted and remained unresolved for months.
