Apple Faces CCPA Probe Over iOS 18 Issues, Warranty Terms

Apple is facing a detailed investigation by India’s Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) over complaints that its iOS 18 update caused issues including green, pink or white lines on iPhone displays and microphone malfunctions. The regulator is also examining Apple’s software warranty terms and whether consumers were unfairly charged for repairs allegedly linked to the update.

The CCPA escalated the matter on July 29, referring it to its investigation wing over alleged consumer-rights violations. A replacement display for an iPhone 15 is estimated to cost Rs 27,900, raising concerns about the financial burden on affected users.

Apple has denied that iOS 18 caused systemic problems in India. In its August 20 response, the company said it had identified no related safety or widespread issues and questioned the investigation’s basis, noting that it involved 75 complaints. Apple also defended its software licence terms, which provide the software without warranty, while its limited warranty covers hardware.

The regulator is assessing whether such terms can apply when consumers allege that a manufacturer-issued update caused device problems. Depending on the findings, authorities could seek penalties, refunds or changes to business practices and warranty disclosures. No final finding has been made.

The case follows regulatory scrutiny Apple faced in Italy over its handling of the iOS 10 update in 2018.
