Delhi H1N1 Cases Rise to 1,777; Health Minister Calls Key Meeting to Review Preparedness

Delhi Health Minister Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh is set to hold a key review meeting on Sunday as the number of H1N1, commonly known as swine flu, cases continues to rise in the national capital. The meeting will focus on hospital preparedness, availability of beds and medicines, testing facilities and surveillance measures.

Delhi has reported 1,777 H1N1 cases so far in 2026, while the total number of influenza cases has reached 2,602.

Delhi Health Department to Review H1N1 Preparedness

Senior officials from the Delhi government, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, municipal health departments and government hospitals are expected to participate in the meeting at the Delhi Secretariat.

The review will focus on whether hospitals have adequate infrastructure to deal with a further increase in influenza cases. Authorities are expected to assess the availability of hospital beds, doctors, medicines, essential medical equipment and testing facilities.

Surveillance and monitoring of H1N1 cases will also be discussed.

Dr Pankaj Kumar Singh has said that Delhi's hospitals have adequate arrangements and urged people not to panic.

Delhi Reports 1,777 H1N1 Cases in 2026

According to the latest available figures, Delhi recorded 159 fresh influenza cases on August 20, including 114 H1N1 cases.

The cumulative figures for 2026 stand at:

• H1N1 cases: 1,777
• Influenza A cases: 2,392
• Influenza B cases: 210
• Total influenza cases: 2,602

Four new Influenza B cases were also reported on August 20.

H1N1 is a subtype of Influenza A and is commonly referred to as swine flu.

ICMR Says No New H1N1 Strain Detected

Meanwhile, scientists from the Indian Council of Medical Research have said that the H1N1 virus currently circulating in India is not a new strain.

According to the scientists, the circulating virus belongs to the A/Missouri/11/2025 (H1N1) pdm09-like strain, associated with clade 6B.1A.5a2a and subclade D.3.1.1.

The strain has reportedly been circulating since 2025.

Health experts have maintained that there is no reason for panic, although people in high-risk groups should remain cautious and follow appropriate medical advice.

The Health Minister's meeting is expected to examine:

• Hospital bed availability
• Availability of medicines
• Availability of doctors and medical staff
• Testing capacity
• H1N1 surveillance systems
• Preparedness of government hospitals
• Coordination between Delhi government and municipal health authorities

The meeting comes as Delhi continues to monitor the rise in influenza cases during 2026.
