Tarique Rahman India Visit: Bangladesh Gives Update Amid BRICS Row

Bangladesh has said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s proposed visit to India will take place when both countries find a mutually acceptable and conducive timeframe. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir said Dhaka is not rushing to finalise the visit and that the schedule will be decided through bilateral discussions.

India had invited Rahman to attend the BRICS summit as chairman of BIMSTEC, while a separate bilateral invitation was reportedly extended earlier. Rahman ultimately did not attend the summit. Kobir clarified that the BRICS invitation was made to Bangladesh in its capacity as BIMSTEC chair, rather than specifically to Rahman as prime minister.

Dhaka said it prefers to develop a renewed relationship with New Delhi through direct bilateral engagement rather than a multilateral forum. Kobir described the current relationship as a “work in progress” and said Bangladesh wants to reset ties around mutual interests.

Relations have remained strained since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh for India following the August 2024 uprising. Dhaka has repeatedly sought her extradition and objected to her political activities from India.

Kobir also said Bangladesh should avoid viewing India as an exceptional focus and instead treat it as one of several countries with which Dhaka maintains bilateral relations.

Recent diplomatic engagement has continued, with India’s High Commissioner in Bangladesh meeting senior officials and political leaders. Discussions have covered bilateral and people-to-people ties, while separate talks addressed wildlife conservation, habitat protection, transboundary pollution and waste management.
