Indian 3 is officially back on track, ending months of uncertainty surrounding the third instalment of Kamal Haasan and S Shankar’s vigilante franchise. The film has now entered post-production, with Haasan set to reprise his role as Senapathy.
The makers confirmed the development on social media with the message, “Senapathy is back with zero tolerance. The resurgence begins in Indian 3: War Mode.” A new poster was also released, featuring what appears to be three different characters played by Haasan, including Senapathy.
A release date has not yet been announced.
Why Indian 3 Was in Doubt
The future of Indian 3 became uncertain after Indian 2, released in July 2024, failed to meet expectations at the box office. The two films were originally conceived as connected chapters, with portions reportedly filmed simultaneously.
Indian 2 ended by teasing the third instalment, including glimpses into Senapathy’s past and the introduction of Veerasekaran Balram, his father.
The sequel reportedly carried a budget of around ₹250 crore and received largely negative reviews for its screenplay and execution. Reports put its worldwide collection at around ₹148–151 crore, while its domestic collections dropped sharply after a strong opening.
The performance fuelled speculation that the third film could be shelved. The latest announcement, however, confirms that the project is moving forward.
Indian 3 Will Explore Senapathy’s Past
The Indian franchise began in 1996 when Kamal Haasan and Shankar collaborated on a vigilante drama centred on corruption and social accountability. Haasan played dual roles as Senapathy, a former freedom fighter, and his corrupt son Chandru. The film became a major success and earned Haasan the National Film Award for Best Actor.
Indian 2 brought Senapathy back nearly three decades later, placing the character in a contemporary setting shaped by social media and public outrage.
The third chapter will shift the timeline and explore Veerasekaran Balram, Senapathy’s father. Haasan will portray the freedom fighter, adding a historical dimension to the franchise.
Siddharth, Kajal Aggarwal, Priya Bhavani Shankar, Bobby Simha and SJ Suryah are also set to return. Anirudh Ravichander is composing the music, Ravi Varman is handling cinematography and Muthuraj Thangavel is the production designer.
The film is being produced by Subaskaran and GKM Tamil Kumaran under the Lyca Productions banner.
