Indian football’s ongoing crisis escalated further on Wednesday after a meeting between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and Indian Super League (ISL) club CEOs failed to resolve the deadlock that has stalled the country’s domestic football circuit. With no breakthrough in sight, representatives of ISL and I-League clubs will now meet Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in an attempt to break the impasse.
The crisis stems from the AIFF’s inability to secure a new commercial partner after the exit of Football & Sports Development Limited (FSDL), which had managed the ISL since its inception. Despite issuing an open tender for a new partner to run the league, the federation received no bids, leaving the upcoming ISL season—and the broader domestic structure—in limbo.
I-League clubs, invited to Wednesday’s hybrid meeting, skipped it citing insufficient notice. Instead, they held a separate meeting in Delhi and collectively drafted a letter to AIFF general secretary M Satyanarayan. Their primary demand: appoint a single, common league partner to oversee the ISL, I-League Tier 1, and I-League Tier 2 to ensure unified governance and long-term football development.
The letter, signed by the owners of all eight I-League clubs, also urged the federation to announce the I-League season within 10 days, proposing a start date between December 15, 2025, and January 5, 2026. They emphasised the need for telecast arrangements with leading broadcasters such as Star Sports, JioCinema, Sony Sports, and others to ensure visibility and continuity.
The stalled season has triggered widespread concern among professional footballers. National team stars Sandesh Jhingan and Sunil Chhetri issued a joint statement earlier this week urging the AIFF to end the standoff. They highlighted how the uncertainty has left the livelihood of “hundreds of footballers and support staff hanging in the balance,” adding that initial frustration had now turned into desperation.
When questioned about the failed meeting with ISL clubs, AIFF president Kalyan Chaubey declined to comment, calling it “unethical.” It remains unclear whether he will attend Thursday’s meeting with the Sports Minister. The federation is under scrutiny not only from clubs and players but also from the Supreme Court, which is monitoring AIFF operations after approving a new constitution in October.
With the AIFF–FSDL agreement set to expire in December and no replacement partnership secured, the 2025–26 ISL season has been put on indefinite hold. Even top clubs such as defending champions Mohun Bagan have paused their training as uncertainty deepens.
The upcoming meeting with the Sports Minister marks a decisive moment for Indian football. With clubs, players, and fans demanding immediate action, the sport’s governing bodies face mounting pressure to restore stability and chart a clear path for the future of domestic football.
