KL Rahul Fumes as India Lose 20th Straight ODI Toss in Raipur; South Africa Opt to Bowl
India’s extraordinary run of bad luck at the toss continued in Raipur, where captain KL Rahul lost India’s 20th straight toss in ODIs. South Africa skipper Temba Bavuma called correctly once again, extending a streak that dates back to November 15, 2023, when India last won a toss during the World Cup semifinal against New Zealand.
Rahul, visibly frustrated, flipped the coin with hope—only to turn away in disbelief the moment Bavuma won the call. South Africa opted to bowl first, mirroring their approach from the Ranchi ODI.
At the toss, Ravi Shastri asked Rahul about the prolonged streak. Rahul responded humorously but admitted the pressure was real.
“The biggest pressure today was the toss. I’ve been practising flipping the coin, but clearly it’s still not working.”
The statistical odds of losing 20 tosses in a row stands at 0.000000954%, a number so absurd that former Bengal cricketer Shreevats Goswami joked:
“India should not come for tosses anymore—just let the opponent decide.”
Despite the toss setback, India stuck with their winning XI from Ranchi, giving Ruturaj Gaikwad another opportunity. South Africa made three changes, bringing in Bavuma, Keshav Maharaj and Lungi Ngidi.
