Israel-Britain Rift Deepens as East Jerusalem Consulate’s Role Is Sharply Reduced

Israel says the British Consulate in east Jerusalem has ceased functioning in its previous capacity, while Britain will retain a smaller diplomatic team under a new name.

Britain will maintain a smaller diplomatic presence in east Jerusalem amid a growing dispute with Israel.

The British Consulate east Jerusalem dispute has deepened after Israel said the mission had “ceased to function” in its previous capacity and ordered 20 British staff members, including the consul general, to leave the country. Britain, however, said the building would remain open under a new name and that a smaller diplomatic team would continue working there.

The development marks another strain in relations between the two long-standing allies, with disagreements over Israeli settlements and Britain’s relationship with the Palestinians at the centre of the dispute.

Britain to Keep Smaller Diplomatic Team

Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said Israel would no longer accept what he described as diplomatic attacks against the country. According to Israel, the building will continue operating with a seven-member diplomatic task force and a “very limited” scope of activity.

Britain’s Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said the building would now be known as the UK Mission, Jerusalem. He said a small team would remain to maintain Britain’s presence and support its position in favour of a two-state solution.

Middle East Minister Stephen Doughty said British diplomats would continue working on issues involving Palestinians and assisting British nationals visiting the area. Britain also said the mission would continue providing essential services and maintaining engagement with Palestinians.

Miliband disputed Israel’s legal authority to close the consulate, noting that the British diplomatic presence in Jerusalem dates back nearly 200 years. He also reiterated the UK’s position that east Jerusalem is occupied territory.

Dispute Follows UK Settlement Trade Ban

The diplomatic dispute follows Britain’s decision to ban trade with Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Britain had previously warned that closing the consulate could trigger reciprocal action against Israeli diplomats. However, London said it would not expel Israeli diplomats immediately because discussions are continuing over rebuilding its staff presence.

The United Nations and much of the international community consider Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank illegal, while Israel disputes that position.

Israel captured the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem during the 1967 Middle East war. Palestinians seek these territories for a future state, while Israel’s current government regards the West Bank as having deep historical and religious significance for the Jewish people.

The latest move leaves Britain maintaining a reduced diplomatic presence while negotiations continue, underscoring the growing disagreement between the two countries over settlements, Palestinian relations and the status of east Jerusalem.
