ISRO Will Not Be Privatised, Space Agency Clarifies on Private Sector Push

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has clarified that it will not be privatised, rejecting speculation that the government's push to expand private sector participation in India's space sector could reduce the role of the country's premier space agency.

ISRO said its importance would not be diminished and that it would continue to lead India's advanced space research, strategic missions, scientific exploration and development of frontier technologies.

The clarification comes amid concerns over plans to increase the role of private companies, startups and public sector undertakings in manufacturing launch vehicles, satellites and other mature space systems.

ISRO said the expansion of private sector participation should not be seen as privatisation. Instead, the reforms are aimed at creating a larger and more globally competitive national space ecosystem, allowing different players to contribute across the space value chain.

The organisation said mature technologies and scalable activities could increasingly be handled by industry as India's manufacturing capabilities expand. This would allow ISRO's scientific and technical workforce to focus more heavily on advanced research and complex future missions.

The agency has already transferred several technologies to industry and said such transfers should not be interpreted as ISRO withdrawing from those areas. The objective is to enable large-scale manufacturing, commercialisation, innovation and greater access to global markets.

ISRO described the transition as the development of an “ISRO-led national space ecosystem”, where the agency continues to guide India's strategic and technological direction while private companies help provide manufacturing capacity, investment and scale.

The space agency said its role would become increasingly focused on frontier areas, including advanced research and development, human spaceflight, next-generation launch systems, deep-space and planetary exploration, and strategic national capabilities.

ISRO will also continue developing cutting-edge communication, navigation and Earth observation technologies, along with advanced payloads, sensors and propulsion systems.

Meanwhile, mature launch vehicles, routine satellites and other established technologies could increasingly be manufactured by private companies and public sector undertakings through competitive processes.

The new approach is intended to allow ISRO to concentrate its resources on future technologies and ambitious missions while industry supports India's rapidly expanding space programme through large-scale production and commercial capabilities.
