Kashmir Transforms into Winter Wonderland as Heavy Snow Blankets Valley

The Kashmir Valley witnessed an intense spell of winter weather as heavy snowfall transformed the region into a breathtaking winter wonderland, while simultaneously disrupting daily life across several districts. Fresh snow covered roads, rooftops, trees, and open fields, creating picturesque scenes that drew admiration from residents and visitors, even as authorities grappled with weather-related challenges.

Officials said the snowfall was particularly heavy in higher-altitude areas, including the famous ski destination of Gulmarg, as well as regions of Kupwara, Baramulla, and Shopian. Authorities said teams were deployed to clear fallen trees and restore electricity supply as conditions improved.

The fresh snowfall also had a major impact on transportation. Key roads across the Valley were covered in dense snow, slowing vehicular movement and forcing traffic advisories in several districts. Snow-clearing operations were launched by road maintenance agencies to keep essential routes open, especially those connecting hospitals and emergency services.

Air travel was affected as well, with flight operations at Srinagar Airport facing disruptions due to poor visibility and icy runway conditions. Several flights were delayed or rescheduled as authorities carried out runway clearance operations. Passengers were advised to check with airlines for updated schedules before heading to the airport.

Weather officials warned that the spell of snowfall could continue, particularly in higher reaches, and urged residents and tourists to exercise caution. Advisory notices highlighted the risk of slippery roads, reduced visibility, and possible avalanches in vulnerable zones. Travellers heading to tourist destinations were advised to follow official updates and avoid unnecessary movement during peak snowfall hours.

Despite the challenges, the snowfall has added to the Valley’s seasonal charm. Snow-laden trees, white rooftops, and frozen landscapes have turned Kashmir into a visual spectacle, drawing attention on social media as images and videos of the snow-covered region circulated widely. Locals described the scenes as stunning, while also acknowledging the hardships brought by severe winter conditions.

The fresh snow is also expected to benefit the region’s tourism sector in the coming weeks, particularly winter sports activities in Gulmarg, which is a major attraction for skiing enthusiasts. However, officials stressed that safety remains the priority, and visitors should adhere strictly to guidelines issued by local authorities.
