The Kashmir Valley continues to wait for its first major snowfall of the season as Srinagar and other plains remain dry just days ahead of New Year celebrations, despite earlier forecasts predicting snow by the end of December.
While higher reaches of the valley witnessed light snowfall on Tuesday evening, Srinagar and surrounding low-lying areas are yet to receive any snow, leaving locals and tourists eagerly watching the skies. The delayed snowfall has raised anticipation, especially as winter tourism typically peaks during this period.
The Meteorological Department had earlier indicated that snowfall would begin around December 30, but changing weather patterns have pushed the timeline further. Cloudy conditions continue to prevail, and officials said snowfall in the upper reaches could still bring colder winds across the region in the coming days.
Despite the uncertainty, the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department has made extensive arrangements for visitors arriving for the New Year holidays. Special focus has been placed on Gulmarg, the region’s iconic winter destination, where snowfall in higher areas has helped maintain winter sports and tourist activities.
Tourism officials said infrastructure, accommodation and safety measures are in place to manage the holiday rush, even as visitors hope for fresh snowfall in Srinagar and nearby plains.
Weather officials also cautioned that northern parts of the country, including Delhi-NCR, are unlikely to see immediate relief from the ongoing cold wave and dense fog. Persistent low temperatures and reduced visibility are expected to continue over the next few days.
As the New Year approaches, all eyes remain on the skies in Kashmir, with snowfall still awaited to mark the peak of the winter season.
