Lakshya Sen Defeats Loh Kean Yew to Enter Japan Masters Semifinals

Lakshya Sen produced a commanding performance to defeat former world champion Loh Kean Yew and secure a place in the semifinals of the Kumamoto Masters Japan 2025. The seventh-seeded Indian, currently ranked No. 15, outplayed the world No. 9 in straight games, winning 21-13, 21-17 in just 40 minutes.

The win strengthens Sen’s narrow head-to-head edge over Loh, taking it to 7–6. It also adds to his growing momentum on the BWF circuit after finishing runner-up at the Hong Kong Open earlier this season. He now prepares to face Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto in the semifinals.

Sen controlled the opening game with authority, entering the interval 11-8 ahead and quickly stretching his lead to 18-9. Loh, who has been struggling for consistency this season, found it difficult to break Sen’s rhythm, eventually conceding the first game 21-13.

The second game saw Loh attempt a resurgence, keeping the score locked at 9-9. However, Sen responded with a burst of six consecutive points, moving ahead 15-9. Loh tried to narrow the margin late in the game, reducing it to 17-18, but Sen held his nerve and closed out the match with composure.

Sen’s sharp court coverage, disciplined defence and well-timed attacking transitions proved decisive. His ability to dictate tempo and force Loh into uncomfortable positions prevented the Singaporean star from settling into any kind of rhythm.

With Nishimoto standing between him and the final, Sen will look to extend his strong run of form and continue his impressive 2025 campaign.
