Hockey India Announces Junior World Cup 2025 Squad; Rohit Named Captain

Hockey India on Thursday announced the 18-member squad for the FIH Junior Men’s World Cup 2025, scheduled to take place from November 28 to December 10 across Chennai and Madurai. The lineup features a balanced mix of experienced juniors and promising young talent, with defender and drag-flick specialist Rohit named captain following his standout performance at the Sultan of Johor Cup, where India clinched silver.

India has been drawn in Pool B, alongside Chile, Switzerland, and Oman—who replace Pakistan following their withdrawal.

The squad, selected under the guidance of legendary former India goalkeeper and current head coach PR Sreejesh, includes goalkeepers Bikramjit Singh and Princedeep Singh. The defensive unit comprises Rohit, Amir Ali—one of the few returning players from the previous Junior World Cup—along with Anmol Ekka, Talem Priyo Barta, Sunil Palakshappa Bennur, and Shardanand Tiwari.

The midfield lineup features Ankit Pal, Adrohit Ekka, Thounaojam Ingalemba Luwang, Manmeet Singh, and Rosan Kujur.

India’s forward line includes Sourabh Anand Kushwaha, Arshdeep Singh, Ajeet Yadav, Dilraj Singh, and Gurjot Singh, who earned senior team exposure at the Asian Champions Trophy 2024. Alternates Ravneet Singh and Rohit Kullu have also been named.

However, the squad will miss influential forward Araijeet Singh Hundal, ruled out with a shoulder injury—a significant setback for India’s attacking depth.

Rohit’s elevation to captaincy reflects his leadership growth and consistency in set-piece execution. His drag-flicking prowess and solid defensive presence have made him a central figure in the junior setup.

Coach Sreejesh’s Comments

Coach Sreejesh emphasised the importance of selecting a seasoned yet mentally resilient squad for a high-pressure tournament like the World Cup.

“We have chosen a tried-and-tested team, with most players understanding what it takes to perform on a stage of this magnitude. Beyond physical skills and team coordination, mental strength under pressure was a key factor in selection,” he said.

He added that playing consistently against the senior Indian team during their shared training camp at SAI Bengaluru had boosted the juniors’ confidence.

“Competing with senior players has strengthened their belief. We are upbeat and eager to put up a strong performance in front of our home crowd.”
