Lee Jae Myung Pushes Phased North Korea Nuclear Deal at UN

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is using the UN General Assembly to promote a phased approach to North Korea’s nuclear programme, proposing that Pyongyang first halt further development, then reduce its arsenal and eventually move towards dismantlement. Seoul has said political and economic incentives could be offered as progress is made.

Lee argues that waiting for complete denuclearisation in a single step is unrealistic given North Korea’s expanding nuclear and missile capabilities. His proposal comes as Pyongyang continues weapons testing and remains reluctant to resume negotiations. North Korea recently conducted launches involving short-range missiles, adding to concerns over its advancing military capabilities.

The South Korean president has also backed discussions aimed at formally ending the 1950-53 Korean War, saying such talks could create space to address the nuclear issue. At the same time, Seoul and Washington have signalled an interest in reopening dialogue with Pyongyang, although North Korea has continued to reject calls for denuclearisation talks under existing conditions.

Lee has welcomed US President Donald Trump’s recent decision to scale back parts of a major military exercise with South Korea as a possible step towards reducing tensions. However, Pyongyang dismissed the move and has continued its weapons activities. The three countries also agreed during UNGA meetings to coordinate efforts on peace, stability and denuclearisation on the Korean Peninsula.
