Bay of Bengal Depression: Odisha, Andhra Brace for Heavy Rain, Strong Winds

A depression over the Bay of Bengal is moving towards the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast and is expected to intensify into a deep depression, bringing heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and strong winds to parts of the region. The India Meteorological Department said the system is likely to cross the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coast between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur from the night of September 23 into the early hours of September 24.

Odisha is expected to see very heavy rain on September 22, with extremely heavy rainfall forecast in several areas on September 23 and 24. Very heavy rain may continue on September 25, followed by heavy rain on September 26. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are also likely to experience widespread rainfall, with extremely heavy rain possible at isolated locations on September 23 and 24.

Wind conditions along the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coast are also expected to worsen. The IMD has forecast winds reaching 55-65 kmph, with gusts up to 75 kmph, around September 23 and 24. Authorities have warned of waterlogging, inundation and localised flooding in vulnerable areas.

The IMD has identified several districts in Odisha and coastal Andhra Pradesh as facing a low to moderate flash-flood risk. Authorities are preparing for the possibility of disruption as the system approaches the coast.
