Monty Panesar Backs Ravi Shastri to Replace McCullum as England Coach After Ashes Loss

Former England spinner Monty Panesar has called for a major shake-up in English cricket, backing Ravi Shastri as a potential replacement for Brendon McCullum following England’s heavy Ashes defeat in Australia.

England’s struggles in the ongoing Ashes series—where Australia raced to a 3–0 lead inside just 11 days—have intensified scrutiny on McCullum’s tenure and the much-discussed Bazball philosophy. The aggressive approach, which brought early success in home conditions, has failed to translate in Australia’s fast and bouncy environments, exposing England’s technical and tactical limitations away from home.

Speaking to journalist Ravi Bisht, Panesar argued that England require a coach with a proven blueprint for beating Australia in their own conditions. “You have to ask who truly understands how to beat Australia—mentally, physically and tactically,” Panesar said. “Ravi Shastri has done it. He should be England’s next head coach.”

Panesar’s endorsement is rooted in Shastri’s exceptional record in Australia. During his tenure as India’s head coach, Shastri oversaw back-to-back historic Test series victories in Australia in 2018–19 and 2020–21, achievements that fundamentally altered perceptions of India as a touring side and set new benchmarks for overseas success.

By contrast, England have appeared short on ideas throughout the Tests in Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide. Their batting has repeatedly collapsed under sustained pressure, while the bowling attack has struggled to maintain intensity across long spells, allowing Australia to dominate decisive phases of each match.

The Ashes crisis has forced England into personnel changes ahead of the Boxing Day Test. Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the remainder of the series, with Gus Atkinson brought in as his replacement. All-rounder Jacob Bethell has also been drafted into the XI in place of Ollie Pope, underlining England’s search for momentum amid fading World Test Championship hopes.

Shastri’s broader coaching credentials further strengthen Panesar’s argument. From 2017 onward, he guided India to 25 Test wins from 43 matches, alongside 51 ODI victories and 42 T20I wins. While an ICC title remained elusive, his tenure is widely credited with transforming India into one of the most formidable overseas teams of the modern era.

With pressure mounting after another Ashes setback, Panesar’s comments have reignited debate over England’s leadership direction—and whether a proven overseas strategist like Ravi Shastri could offer the reset English cricket is searching for.
