A political exchange has intensified between Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy after critical remarks made during an election campaign in Kerala. Vijayan strongly responded, stating that Reddy was “misinformed” and accused him of ridiculing Kerala and its people without understanding the state’s development model.
The remarks came in the backdrop of the upcoming Assembly elections in Kerala, where political rhetoric has been gaining momentum. Vijayan’s response reflects a broader ideological and governance-based clash between the two leaders.
In his response, Pinarayi Vijayan emphasized Kerala’s progress through what he described as “sustainable and inclusive development.” He invited Revanth Reddy to visit Kerala and understand its governance approach, particularly its welfare schemes and social indicators.
Vijayan highlighted that Kerala has consistently ranked among the top-performing states in multiple national indices. Referring to the NITI Aayog Sustainable Development Index (2023–24), he pointed out that Kerala secured the top position with a score of 79, while Telangana ranked sixth.
To counter allegations of administrative failure and corruption, Vijayan presented several key statistics. He stated that Kerala has one of the lowest poverty rates in India at just 0.55%, compared to Telangana’s 5.88%.
On education, Kerala continues to lead with a literacy rate of 95.3%, significantly higher than Telangana’s 76.9%. In healthcare, the state has achieved notable milestones, including a low infant mortality rate of 5 per 1,000 live births, which is comparable to developed nations.
Vijayan also highlighted that stronger healthcare infrastructure has contributed to higher life expectancy in Kerala, with residents living several years longer than the national average.
The Kerala Chief Minister questioned the basis of Reddy’s criticism, calling it politically motivated and lacking factual grounding. He accused the Telangana leader of ignoring challenges within his own state, including issues related to governance and public welfare.
Vijayan also dismissed allegations of corruption and administrative inefficiency, asserting that official data contradicts such claims. He further criticized the Congress for what he described as inconsistent political positioning, especially in relation to central policies affecting states.
The response came after Revanth Reddy criticized the Kerala government during campaign events ahead of the April 9 Assembly elections. He alleged that the state government had failed to effectively manage development projects and accused it of being silent on key national issues.
Reddy also targeted both the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the BJP, urging voters to hold them accountable. While acknowledging Kerala’s achievements in education and social development, he attributed much of that progress to previous Congress-led governments.
The exchange between the two chief ministers highlights deeper political and ideological differences regarding governance models, development priorities, and public welfare strategies.
As the election approaches, such debates are expected to shape voter perception and influence the political narrative in Kerala.
